4. Benefits Obtained by Sri Lanka Port Authority in Relation to Employee Health and Safety.

Sri Lanka Port Authority, there are a range of advantages associated with integrating an occupational health and safety program. Health and safety in port industries are important considerations to ensure the well-being of workers. The port environment can be unhealthy and dangerous, therefore it is crucial to have rules and standards in place for occupational safety. In SLPA they can manage the employee's health and safety properly. Therefore the Sri Lanka Port Authority explored the primary benefits of occupational health and safety outlined below,  





1. Increased Productivity,

If any organization has implemented safety measures, the organization can ensure that their employees are protected from harm and dangerous situations. it means the organization can increase their productivity. When employees feel the workplace is safe, they always try to complete their tasks immediately. Sri Lanka Port Authority also uses this same scenario to increase their productivity. The below report mentions the last five years' gross profit (before paying tax) in SLPA,







According to this report, it shows the proper growth in every year in SLPA. This achievement's best reason is employee health and safety. Compared to 2019 and 2020, In 2020 the gross profit goes down. The main reason for that is the COVID-19 attack. This comparison also shows employee health and safety. It properly shows when employee health and safety are not well the gross profit goes down, after the end of COVID-19 - 19 it shows the profit well increase.  

2. Job Satisfaction,

Workplace health and safety have a significant positive effect on job satisfaction. It shows that when employees have a safe work environment, it leads to a higher level of job satisfaction. SLPA management also uses these methods to improve the job satisfaction of their employees. According to this gross profit chart, this chart clearly shows it. In 2020 during the COVID-19 attack employees had less job satisfaction. After that, the Sri Lanka Port Authority managed that incident and prepared a good working environment for their employees. The 2021 gross profit clearly shows how Sri Lanka Port Authority manages the employee's work environment. 

3. Increase the Company's Reputation,

Today, information is spread at the touch of a button, and the modern public demands accountability and transparency. Rather than shy away from this, successful companies take advantage of it. Health and safety initiatives are used not only to avoid a bad reputation but also to build a good one. Port Authority also maintains their reputation for increasing business growth. If employees are happy about their organization, the business growth of that organization becomes higher. Sri Lanka Port Authority also puts more strength into keeping their reputation at a good level. According to the Container Port Performance Index 2022 initiated by the World Bank and S&P Global Port Performance Program quoted in the Review, Colombo Port, which was ranked 33rd last year, has been ranked 24th this year (2022). Highest-performing port in South Asia award was also won by Colombo Port. Every year this reputation has increased. The reason is that SLPA has a good safe working environment for employees. If employees have a good safe work environment, they try to complete their tasks immediately.   




4. Reducing risk in the workplace,

Good workplace health and safety standards always start with the people at the top. Directors and board members have collective and individual responsibility for health and safety. Their role in ensuring health and safety is vital for good governance, staff morale, and business success. SLPA management tries to minimize risk in the work environment. According to SLPA, they achieved below targets by reducing risk in the workplace.

  • Better communication with the employees.
  • Motivation of all employees.
  • Successfully achieved the targets.
  • Identify the hazards in the workplace.

      They are mostly communicate health and safety policies with using training programs, from their supervisors, and using medical staff. Management also try to get good connection with staff. These kind of strategies are using to communicate with the employees.
